What are the Magnificent 7 stocks?
The Magnificent 7, or Mag 7, are seven giant US tech-driven companies that have done much of the lifting in the S&P 500 since 2023.
Apple (AAPL)
Microsoft (MSFT)
Nvidia (NVDA)
Alphabet (GOOGL and GOOG)
Amazon (AMZN)
Meta Platforms (META)
Tesla (TSLA)
Bank of America strategist Michael Hartnett coined the name in May 2023. It's a nod to the 1960 Western The Magnificent Seven.
How have the Magnificent 7 stocks performed in 2026?
Not as a pack. Apple leads the group, and only Apple and Nvidia are beating the S&P 500. Meta and Tesla are down for the year.
The 2026 returns on this page are price changes from the December 31, 2025, close and leave out dividends. Alphabet's figure uses its Class A shares (GOOGL). Its Class C shares (GOOG) are up 1.1% over the same stretch.
The gap between the best and worst Mag 7 stock is 45.1 percentage points. For how that spread looked a week earlier, see the Magnificent 7 on October 18.
How much of the S&P 500 is the Magnificent 7?
About 35%, going by SPY, an ETF that tracks the S&P 500. As of September 30, 2026, the seven companies made up 34.7% of SPY, counting both Alphabet share classes. All seven sat among the fund's 10 largest holdings, with Nvidia the biggest at 8.4%.
That's because the S&P 500 weights companies by market value, so the biggest names count the most. Our chart of the top 10 S&P 500 stocks by value gained shows where this year's dollars went, and our S&P 500 guide explains how the index is built.
How has the S&P 500 done without the Magnificent 7?
Better than the Mag 7 itself this year. By our math, using each stock's weight in SPY, the other 493 companies are up about 12.3% in 2026 through October 23. The Mag 7 as a weighted group is up about 9.7%.
That's the reverse of 2023, when the group carried the index. The seven stocks still added about 3.3 percentage points of the S&P 500's 11.4% gain this year, simply because they're so big.
The equal-weight S&P 500, which gives every company the same slice, tells the same story. The fund that tracks it, RSP, is up 13.0% in 2026 through October 23. See equal-weight vs the S&P 500 and how the median S&P 500 stock compares.
When do the Magnificent 7 report earnings?

What does it mean for investors?
Owning the S&P 500 still means a big bet on seven companies, but in 2026 those seven aren't moving as one. For more on that tradeoff, read why the S&P 500 is a narrow bet on tech, the Mag 7 carrying the market as of October 1 and Luke Kawa on the Mag 7.
